United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned widespread human rights violations in war zones, including Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, warning that conflicts are fueling mass suffering and lawlessness.
Speaking at the Opening of the 58th Regular Session of the Human Rights Council, Guterres said human rights violations have “skyrocketed” in the occupied Palestinian territory since the October 7 Hamas attacks and Israel’s devastating military response in Gaza.
“I am gravely concerned by the rising violence in the occupied West Bank by Israeli settlers and other violations, as well as calls for annexation,” he stated. He called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the release of hostages, and a two-state solution with an independent Palestinian state that includes Gaza.
Guterres also condemned escalating conflicts in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Myanmar, calling on warring parties to protect civilians and respect human rights.
“The people of Gaza have already suffered too much. It’s time for a permanent ceasefire. It’s time for an end to the occupation,” he emphasized.
The Secretary-General urged the international community to take stronger action to prevent further human rights violations and ensure accountability in conflict zones.
