ZANU-PF has poured cold water on growing speculation over a possible succession debate at its upcoming Annual National People’s Conference set for Mutare from October 10 to 23, 2025 — declaring the issue “not for discussion.”
Party Information and Publicity Director, Cde Farai Marapira, made the firm pronouncement, saying those hoping for fireworks on the leadership question are wasting their breath.
“Succession is not on the agenda. It is not an issue within ZANU-PF, and it will not be discussed in Mutare,” said Marapira. “That subject belongs strictly to the ZANU-PF Congress, which is scheduled for 2027 — not this conference.”
The statement comes amid whispers from political observers and social media chatter suggesting that the Mutare indaba could see murmurs over leadership renewal within the ruling party. But Marapira shot down such speculation, insisting that any talk of succession was being stirred by “outsiders with no history or stake in the party.”
“Those talking about succession are not ZANU-PF members,” he said. “These are outsiders trying to impose their agenda on a revolutionary party with clear structures, principles, and processes. We will not be swayed by external noise.”
The ruling party’s annual conference, to be held in Manicaland’s provincial capital for the first time since 2011, is expected to draw thousands of delegates from across Zimbabwe. Focus will instead be on economic performance, grassroots mobilisation, and preparations for 2028, according to officials close to the organizing committee.
