The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has announced the indefinite postponement of the opening of the 2021 first term.
In a statement, the ministry’s permanent secretary Tumisang Thabela said the postponement was due to rising cases of covid-19, the risk posed by the new more contagious variant of the virus as well as the threat posed by tropical depression Chalane.
“Having deferred the opening of schools beyond 04 January 2021, the dates for the commencement of the 2021 School Calendar for all primary and secondary schools will be announced in due course as Government monitors the situation,” reads the statement.
Mrs Thabela however said 2020 Zimsec ‘O’ and ‘A’ level examinations will resume on the 5th of January and run until the 5th of February 2021 as previously announced.
She took the opportunity to remind learners, parents and guardians to reinforce wearing of face masks, social distancing as well as handwashing to prevent the spread of covid-19.
