Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating a gruesome double murder in which a suspected mentally ill man stoned two people to death near Batanai Roman Catholic Church in Manoti, Gokwe. The tragic incident occurred on 17 July 2024 around 5:00 PM.
Midlands ZRP spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the victims, Shekem Muromo (58) and Bonface Gwatiringa (60), were walking home from Manoti Business Centre when they encountered Obvious Ngwazani, 35, shirtless by the roadside. The pair reportedly instructed Ngwazani to put on his shirt, which allegedly provoked him into a violent rage.
Witnesses say Ngwazani armed himself with a stone and struck Muromo on the head, killing him instantly. He then turned on Gwatiringa, repeatedly striking him with stones until he too succumbed to his injuries. The horrifying attack unfolded in front of a Roman Catholic priest, who promptly reported the crime to the police.
Police arrived at the scene and transported the bodies to Gokwe South District Hospital. The ZRP has issued a plea to the public, urging families with mentally challenged relatives to ensure they receive appropriate medical care and supervision as prescribed by healthcare professionals or mental institutions.
