Penhalonga’s Underground Drama: Miners Rescued, Mines Ministry Digs Deep for Safety – Assessments Before Gold Rush 2.0!

The mines and mining development ministry says through assessments will be undertaken before mining activities can resume at Penhalonga where 15 miners that had been trapped underground were rescued alive on Sunday.

Speaking after the rescue Mines Minister Zhemu Soda said the rescued miners told them that the whole mine underground has collapsed and a proper assessment will have to be done before activities or operations resume at this mine.

Penhalonga is a mining village in Mutasa District of Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe, located 18 km north of Mutare in a valley where the Tsambe and Imbeza Rivers meet the Mutare River. Ancient gold workings have been found in the area. In 1895 the Penhalonga Mine opened, and the village grew around the gold mine.
