Shabanie mine residents are threatening to petition government over exorbitant rentals which have been increased by one hundred percent without any justification.
According to a notice sent to tenants, Shabanie Mine increased rentals of its properties by more than 100 percent.
According to the residents, this is the second time in two months that the mining company has increased rentals by more than 100 percent with rent for a house in Maglass Cottage area now pegged at $459 while a full house rental in Hillview varies between $989-$1100.
In the draft petition, the residents are also demanding that Shabanie Mine Chief Executive Officer Chirandu Dhlembeu account for missing funds from the sale of properties in Mashava.
The residents, some of whom are former workers of Shabanie Mine also allege that of the total amount realised from the sale of properties in Mashava only 3 million was accounted for with more than 10 million unaccounted for.
Efforts to get in touch with the Shabanie Mine CEO were fruitless as his phone was not reachable.
Meanwhile, sources say Shabanie Mine has started formalities to sell its houses but former employees are said to be concerned that the process will not be transparent but will be shrouded in secrecy.
