The Center for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) has called upon mining enterprises within the Great Dyke to take inspiration from Mimosa’s pioneering sustainable mining initiative, notably its endeavor to establish a recreation center and wildlife park adjacent to its mining operations. This move, according to CNRG Director Farai Maguwu, signifies a shift towards a more comprehensive approach, moving beyond profit-oriented strategies and committing to meaningful contributions to the communities hosting these mining operations.

In an interview with Great Dyke News, Maguwu emphasized the significance of creating recreational parks for wildlife as part of a company’s Social-Economic responsibility. He underscored that such initiatives not only benefit the local community but also symbolize a broader commitment to societal well-being.

Maguwu stressed that foreign-owned companies in Zimbabwe, alongside others, should transcend mere profit-seeking agendas and actively engage in community development endeavors.

Highlighting the enduring impact, Maguwu emphasized that these recreational parks would persist even after the closure of mining operations. He emphasized the importance for mining to foster long-lasting institutions and structures that transcend the mining lifecycle.

Mimosa, Zimbabwe’s oldest Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) producer, recently unveiled plans to establish a wildlife park adjoining its mining site. This development is anchored by a water dam, currently under construction as part of the new Tailings Storage Facility being built by the miner. Notably, the introduction of wild animals like Zebras to the park signals a commitment to this sustainable initiative.
