A Zvishavane resident, Boniface Chisaka (46), has been sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of unlawfully possessing ZESA copper cables.

The case was heard at the Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court, where Chisaka was found guilty of contravening the Electricity Act, which prohibits possession of materials used to transmit electricity without a valid permit.

The court heard that on November 20, detectives acted on a tip-off and raided Chisaka’s residence, where he was caught burning and stripping ZESA cables. The recovered cables weighed 17kg and were valued at USD 731.

Chisaka failed to provide any authorization for the materials and was subsequently arrested.
