Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s first president and a key figure in the country’s independence struggle, has died at the age of 95 in Windhoek. Nujoma, who co-founded the liberation movement Swapo in the 1960s, led Namibia to independence from South Africa in 1990 and served as president until 2005. He had been hospitalized for an illness in recent weeks.

Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba expressed deep sorrow, describing Nujoma as a pivotal figure in the nation’s history.
