A dramatic nighttime kudu chase ended in tragedy after a suspected poacher was swept away while attempting to cross a flooded river in Kwekwe. The incident occurred on February 14, 2025, at around 10 PM at Morena Game Ranch, where four men were allegedly engaged in illegal hunting.

According to police reports, Severino Kufahandiuyi (25) and his three accomplices were in pursuit of a kudu when the animal dashed across the swollen Matura River. Determined not to let their quarry escape, the men attempted to wade through the fast-moving waters. However, the strong currents proved too powerful, and Kufahandiuyi was swept away. His body was later retrieved by authorities and taken to Kwekwe General Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examination.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has since confirmed the incident, once again warning the public against attempting to cross flooded rivers under any circumstances.

Illegal poaching remains a serious concern in Zimbabwe, with private game ranches like Morena often targeted by hunters seeking bushmeat. This latest tragedy highlights not only the dangers of wildlife crime but also the risks associated with reckless river crossings during the rainy season.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
