The tragic accident that claimed 24 lives on the Beitbridge-Masvingo highway this morning has prompted calls for more effective road safety measures, including the introduction of highway patrols and shared responsibility among passengers in monitoring drivers.
In light of the devastating crash, Tatenda Chinoda, a veteran defensive driving instructor and Roads4Life Champion for the African Region, emphasized that improving road safety requires a collective effort.
“The responsibility cannot rest solely on police officers at roadblocks. Passengers also need to play a role in ensuring the safety of everyone on board,” he said.
Tafadzwa Goliati, National Coordinator for the Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ), echoed this sentiment, advocating for the introduction of highway patrols similar to those in developed countries. He believes such measures would help reduce accidents and increase driver accountability.
