Shamwari ye Mwanasikana, a Zimbabwean women’s rights organization, is urging the government to fulfill the commitments of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that promote the welfare and empowerment of girls.

The organization’s director, Amai Ekenia Chifamba, emphasized the need for Zimbabwe to prioritize education, health, and leadership opportunities for girls, in line with the United Nations’ agenda.

“The government must do more to ensure girls are given the opportunities they deserve to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society,” said Chifamba.

Last Friday, the world celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child this year’s International Day of the Girl Child comes amid persistent global challenges affecting young girls, including climate change, conflict, poverty, and the denial of their basic rights. The United Nations warned that many girls are still unable to make their own life choices, and their futures remain restricted by unequal access to education and opportunities.

The theme of this year’s celebration, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” aims to inspire societies to create more spaces for girls to lead and learn. It emphasizes the need to expand educational and leadership opportunities for the more than one billion girls worldwide.
