Zimbabwe’s Environment Ministry has announced plans to cull elephants as part of a strategy to manage the country’s growing elephant population and support the Presidential Feeding Schemes by providing protein.
Speaking on the issue, Environment Minister Sithembiso Nyoni indicated that Zimbabwe has an elephant population that exceeds what the country can sustainably manage.
Minister Nyoni emphasized that the culling would be carried out in compliance with the law and that the government is committed to ensuring that the process is conducted responsibly.
“We are working very hard to ensure that within the confines of the law, we can cull the elephants allowed for us to cull and input the meat into the Presidential Feeding Schemes to provide much-needed protein,” she said.
The minister highlighted that the overpopulation of elephants has become a significant challenge, leading to increased human-wildlife conflict and environmental degradation in some areas. “We have more elephants than we need or can manage,” Nyoni stated, revealing that she has already written to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) to initiate the culling process.
The decision to cull elephants comes amid growing concerns about the impact of overpopulation on ecosystems and rural communities that often face destruction of crops and property due to elephant activities. While elephant culling is a controversial issue globally, Zimbabwe’s government views it as a necessary measure for both wildlife management and community benefit.
